The kitchen is the heart of the home, and it wouldn’t beat without the sink. That’s why when kitchen sink problems come up, it can be incredibly inconvenient, turning everyday tasks into a challenge.
As Mitlon’s trusted plumbing company, Green Energy Mechanical Inc. knows that few things are more frustrating than plumbing problems, especially those in the kitchen. But if you know what to do when a problem crops up, you’ll be more prepared to tackle the issue and get back to your daily routine faster. Here are three common problems with kitchen sinks and how you can solve them to restore your kitchen plumbing’s efficiency.
1. Leaky Faucets
One of the most common kitchen sink problems that you will likely experience at some point or another is a leaky faucet. While a leaking faucet may seem like an annoyance more than anything, it can actually waste water over time.
A few things can cause your faucet to leak, like:
- A loose sink handle that isn’t pushed all the way down
- Loose faucet coverings
- Loose or malfunctioning valves
If you have a leaky faucet, make sure you push the handle all the way down. If that doesn’t help, call a professional to come inspect your sink. Experienced plumbers know the most common causes of faucet leaks and can quickly diagnose the issue while providing timely and effective repairs.
2. Drain Clogs
We’ve all been there: a clogged drain makes it impossible to drain wastewater. And in worst case scenarios, it causes a smelly, foul odor to eminate throughout your house.
One of the biggest causes of clogged drains in the kitchen is homeowners throwing too many food scraps down the sink. While your garbage disposal does an excellent job breaking up food, certain things can quickly clog up your sink, like grease, oil, paper products (like napkins), eggshells, and animal bones.
The good news is that you can easily prevent clogged drains by:
- Not putting large chunks of food down the sink
- Always throwing grease, oil, and coffee grounds in the trash can
- Avoiding chemical cleaners, as they contain harsh ingredients that can corrode your pipes
If you have a stubborn drain clog that is making it difficult for you to enjoy your kitchen, the best thing for you to do is schedule plumbing services with a reliable plumber.
3. Poor Water Pressure
One of the more frustrating kitchen sink problems you could come across is a lack of water pressure. Poor water pressure from your kitchen sink makes it difficult to wash dishes and clean, so it’s important to determine what’s causing the lack of water pressure and how to fix it.
More often than not, poor water pressure is due to a buildup of calcium deposits in the faucet aerator, which is the screen fitting that screws onto the tip of your faucet. Fortunately, you can typically fix this on your own.
If you have a dirty or clogged aerator, simply unscrew it from your facet and clean it. If dirt is clogging the screen, you can use a needle to poke holes in the screen and clear it out. Meanwhile, if calcium deposits cover a majority of the aerator, soak it in vinegar overnight and rinse it off in the morning before screwing it back on.
These cleaning tips only work if the aerator is actually dirty. If it has rust, you should just replace it.
If you still have poor water pressure even after cleaning the faucet’s aerator, it’s time to call a plumber.
