Installing a conventional air conditioning system with ductwork can take several days and disrupt daily activities in the home. Ductless systems are far less invasive to install and, depending on the number of indoor and outdoor units required, can be up and running in as little as one day.
The EPA estimates that most ducted systems lose over 30% of their energy due to poorly sealed and wrapped ductwork. It can cost thousands to reseal ductwork and wrap it with approved insulation. Even so, energy is still lost since most ducted systems are installed in unconditioned spaces and there is thermal loss through the long metal trunk lines. There is no ductwork needed with mini-split systems. This means that they are at least 30% and in most cases over 40% more efficient than traditional air conditioning systems.
Ductless cooling and heating systems follow ENERGY STAR guidelines, which means they are far more energy efficient than the minimum standards set forth by the U.S. Federal Government. Improved efficiency saves money of course, but it also helps reduce your total carbon output.

If you are in an older house with an old boiler delivering radiated heat, and you want to add cooling, switching to a ductless heat pump system can kill two birds with one stone by offering both cooling and heating in one system. An air conditioner works by transferring the heat from inside to outside. A heat pump is an air conditioner that simply reverses the flow of refrigerant. Combining the functions means one less system to worry about. In addition, newer hyper-heating systems provide reliable heat even when it’s below freezing outside.
