Can You Replace a Kitchen Sink Without Replacing the Countertop?

Replacing your kitchen sink is a great way to add style and functionality to your kitchen, especially if your sink is several years old and desperately needs an update.

However, your sink is an integral part of your kitchen’s counter space, meaning you can quickly damage your countertop during a sink replacement. If a new sink is in your future, then you likely want to know: Can you replace a kitchen sink without replacing the countertop?

As Milton’s experienced plumber, Green Energy Mechanical Inc. explains how to replace a sink without tearing out the countertop and why working with an experienced plumbing contractor is crucial to keep your kitchen counters looking pristine once the new sink is installed.

Can You Replace a Kitchen Sink But Not the Countertop?

The short answer to the question, “Can you replace a kitchen sink without replacing the countertop?” is yes, you can replace one and not the other.

However, it isn’t as simple as picking out a new sink and installing it yourself. Your countertop and kitchen sink often connect to each other through sink clips and silicone sealant, which can complicate matters during the replacement and installation process. Trying to DIY this project can lead to damage that causes you to replace your countertop when you didn’t plan to, so always work with an experienced plumber who knows what factors to consider when installing a new sink.

Factors To Consider When Replacing a Kitchen Sink

To replace your kitchen sink while avoiding damage to the countertop, you must consider various factors and use the right tools to ensure the process goes smoothly and successfully.

Size

The most important factor when considering kitchen sink installation is the size of your current model versus that of your new one. If they’re identical, then the installation should be straightforward. This is the best option for saving money and keeping your current countertop intact.

However, you might want a larger sink to add utility to your kitchen. If so, you must consider your countertop and surrounding cabinet space. A professional can safely cut the counter to fit your new sink and reduce possible damage. If the material of your counter is quartz or granite, then the process should be easier since they’re easy to cut and polish.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking to downsize your kitchen sink, you’ll have no choice but to replace the countertop along with it.

Mounting

Your kitchen sink’s mounting is another crucial consideration. If your countertop covers the perimeter of your sink, then you have an undermount sink. On top of being easy to clean, these give your kitchen a more seamless appearance while increasing counter space. However, they can also be more difficult to replace without damaging the counter due to the adhesive holding the sink basin in place.

On the other hand, drop-in sinks stick out on top of your counter and are generally less expensive to install. They’re also far easier to replace than undermount kitchen sinks.

Removing a Kitchen Sink While Preventing Damage to Your Countertop

Because kitchen sinks firmly attach to your countertop, you’ll want to carefully follow a few steps to avoid injury and ultimately perform a successful sink replacement. Be sure to have a seven-piece multitool, a sharp razor blade, and some wedges before proceeding.

Remove your water supply line and garbage disposal from the power source. Take a seven-piece multitool and insert a plastic wedge at the corner of the sink. Keep inserting wedges as you continue across the sink’s front end until the seam breaks.

If the wedges don’t do the trick, try using your razor blade to break through the caulking. Proceed to both sides of the sink, breaking the seal at those points before driving the final wedge into the back section. This will allow you to remove your sink from the countertop.

The best way to ensure a seamless sink removal and installation is work with an experienced plumber
